Older People's Health Issues - Mental Health and Depression
There have been many advances in knowledge and therapies in the area of mental health illness in the past 50 years. Evidence based practice, changes in government policies and shifts in community attitude have all occurred. But the reality for many older people with mental health illness is that they continue to be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed and ineffectively managed. Mental health illness may be the result of late-life changes and losses or have been experienced by your client/resident over many years. Either way it has the potential to impact on his quality of life in many ways. Mental illness may be chronic or occurring for the first time.
