Older People's Health Issues - Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson's disease was first described in 1817 by James Parkinson. He described it as "shaky palsy". It is estimated that 100,000 people in Australia have Parkinson's disease. What triggers the disease is not known. There is however, growing evidence that it may be due to a combination of environmental and genetic factors. The disease is caused by degeneration of neurons in the brain that control movement. This results in a decrease in dopamine, a powerful chemical in the brain that assists in co-ordinating movement.
