85% of all the people in Australia who have diabetes have Type 2 diabetes. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or those from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background have a greater risk than the general population. It is estimated that the incidence of undiagnosed diabetes matches those already diagnosed. 275 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Symptoms are often subtle or non-existent and screening is not consistent for older people. 4 Older people living in residential aged care are more vulnerable to the complications of diabetes and often lack access to specialist diabetic services. And in general the impact of the disease on older people is underestimated and worse still is more likely to be mismanaged.
